Lightning Appears To Strike St. Peter's Basilica Hours After Pope Benedict XVI Announces Resignation

lightning strikes basilica vatican

Was it just Mother Nature or a sign from God?
Lightning appeared to strike St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City on Monday just hours after Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation, according to the BBC. The lightning strike happened around 6 p.m. local time
Global news agency Agence France-Presse was the first to publish the startling photo of a lightning bolt coming out of the heavens and appearing to strike the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, one of Catholicism's holiest sites.
AFP photographer Filippo Monteforte caught the amazing photograph on Monday evening during a storm. "It was icy cold and the rain was falling in sheets," he told AFP. "When the storm started, I thought that lightning might strike the rod, so I decided it was worth seeing whether – if it DID strike – I could get the shot at exactly the right moment.”
He waited two hours before lightning struck twice and he captured a still image. “The first bolt was huge and lit up the sky, but unfortunately I missed it," he told AFP. "I had better luck the second time, and was able to snap a couple of images of the dome illuminated by the bolt.”
Some questioned the authenticity of Monteforte's photograph.
But Fairfax Media photographer Nick Moir told Australia's The Age via The Sydney Morning Herald that the image looks legitimate. "It's probably not that rare for St Peter's to get hit," he told the publication. "The bolt is hitting a lightning rod to the side of the cross, it seems."
On Monday, Benedict announced he will resign from the papal office on Feb. 28 due to health concerns. He is the first pope to do so in nearly 600 years.

Story Of How Robbers Rape Woman In Husbands Presence

                          Rapists
The Suspects - Peter Anigboro (25 years old), Lucky Williams (22) and Olise Friday

Residents of Ogida quarters in Benin City were shocked last Saturday when they woke to see a house wife (names withheld) shouting and pleading for help.
They rushed to the house only to discover that the woman was raped by three young men who stormed the house at about 3am.
They further discovered the victim’s husband who was tied by the robbers and pushed  under the bed. Saturday Vanguard learnt that the suspects Peter Anigboro (25 years old), Lucky Williams (22) and Olise Friday, forced the door of the residence of the victim open with an impoverished gun and a dagger.
The suspects immediately went for the husband, whom they tied his legs and hands after which he was pushed under the bed.
After taking care of the husband, they went for the wife whom Saturday Vanguard learnt was their original target. It was gathered that the robbers have been monitoring her movement for some days before they struck last Saturday.
It was learnt that they requested her to declare the money she sold that day from her recharge card which she quickly obliged.
The robbers further requested for recharge cards, hand sets and other valuables. While they were threatening, the victim pleaded that they should not kill her. But to her greatest shock, they pounced on her and started undressing her warning that she will be killed if she tried to resist them.
The leader of the gang, Peter Anikoro was the first to rape her and while he was doing that, his mask pulled off and that was when the victim saw the face of her attacker.
Peter is a neighour who resides in the opposite building. However, after taking his turn, others followed suit.
As if the suspects were destined to meet their waterloo that same day, they attacked another house around that same Ogida quarters where they met a 60 year-old woman and attempted to rape her too. The woman pleaded with them, and though she was not raped, they fiddled with her private part and carted away hand sets and cash from the house.
Luck ran out with the rampaging robbers when Peter took other members of the gang to his uncle’s house at Siluko road to rob. Unfortunately for them, they could not gain access to the house due to the protector.
But through the window, they were able to cart away a hand set. But some body spotted them and raised an alarm which attracted the attention of members of the vigilante group in the area. They gave the robbers a hot chase and with the arrival of policemen on patrol, they were apprehended.
The Assistant Public Relations Officer of the state Command, ASP Ahwara Ejiroro, who paraded the suspects last Monday, said they confessed to have been involved in several robbery operations and have raped several other women in the past.
According to him, “they operate with impoverish guns and daggers and their victims will think they have a real gun while they also threaten with the daggers.
As if what they did that same night was not enough, Peter who is the leader of the gang took them to his uncle’s house to rob and that was where they were apprehended. They will be charged to court for rape and armed robbery”.
Leader of the gang Peter, confessed to Saturday Vanguard: “I don’t have a job so what I did that day was to call two of my friends and told them that we are going to operate that night. We met around 9pm in a palmwine joint close to the house.
We moved to the place around 3am when everybody had gone to bed. We were monitoring her movement from the wine bar”.
Asked why they decided to rape the victim, Peter said “it was devil’s work. We did not know when we did it”.
When asked why they could not rape the 60- year woman, their second victim, he explained that “she was crying and begging us. So we felt sorry for her. We only fingered her and left the house”.
In another development, the police in Benin also arrested a 73 year old grand father for using a kitchen knife to stab to death a 27 year old man, Gabriel Amayahu Aigbosuria. The suspect, Williams Omobude Uwadia was arrested at the scene of crime shortly after the alleged murder.
Saturday Vanguard learnt that the suspect had earlier in the day had a disagreement with the deceased following which he went to the nearest police Division in Benin City to effect his arrest, a situation which made the police to follow him for the arrest, but unknown to them that he had a kitchen knife on him. As the policemen were trying to mediate on the matter, the suspect was alleged to have suddenly brought a knife and stabbed the 27 year old man.
The complainant then turned accused as he was arrested by the police and transferred to the state CID, Benin for further investigation.
Ejiroro who expressed shock over the incident confirmed the arrest and said the state police homicide section was already investigating the murder case, just as he assured that the police will get to the root of the matter.
Meanwhile, the state House of Assembly has called on the Inspector General of Police to appoint a substantive Commissioner of Police in the state with a view to help curb crime in the state.
The Majority Leader of the House, Philip Shuaibu, who reiterated this call to Saturday Vanguard, shortly after the abduction of the lawmaker representing Esan Central constituency, Mr Victor Edora, lamented that the state needs a substantive CP to be able to fight crime head on.
Acording to him, “we are not happy that each day people are kidnapped or robbed in different parts of the country.
There have been incessant robbery operations along the by-pass and it seems the police is helpless about it. We are appealing to the IG of Police to assist us because we need an effective policing of the entire state to be able to check crime effectively”.

An appreciative nation Tuesday honoured its heroes: members of the Super Eagles national football team and their officials who did Nigeria proud by winning the Africa Cup of Nations trophy that had eluded the country for 19 years.
The celebration of the team started right on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where they were besieged by an ecstatic crowd that had been waiting for them.
The players and officials arrived in Abuja at about 3.20pm from Johannesburg, venue of the just-concluded continental soccer tournament, during which they defeated the Stallions of Burkina Faso by a lone goal to lift the trophy. They arrived without Victor Moses and Ambrose Efe.
President Goodluck Jonathan rounded off the celebrations a few hours later at the State House where he feted them like kings. The state banquet was not only about eating and dancing alone as the president announced a wide-range of gifts, including national honours, for the  players and their handlers in appreciation of their efforts in bringing  back Nigeria’s soccer glory.
Super Eagles’ Coach, Stephen Keshi, was N10 million richer courtesy of the Federal Government. In addition, he was conferred with the nation’s fourth ranking national honour – Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
Each of the players got N5 million and were conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).
The team captain, Joseph Yobo, who also got a cash gift of N5 million like other players, was, however, conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
All the assistant coaches also got N5 million each and were also conferred with the national honour of OON while the technical officials got N2 million each.
In addition to the cash gifts and the national honours, Jonathan also announced that each member of the team will get a plot of land in Abuja, the nation’s capital. The allocation papers were presented to them at the ceremony.
The president also announced donations from individuals such as Chairman, Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga ($1m); former Managing Director, United Bank for Africa Plc, Mr. Tony Elumelu- ($500,000) and Sir Emeka Offor  ($500,000).
The nation’s leading entrepreneur, Alhaji Aliko Dangote gave a cash gift of N5 million to each of the players.
At the event, which started two-and-a half hour behind schedule, saw Jonathan acknowledging the superlative accomplishment of the Super Eagles noting that it was an “awesome achievement for which you deserve a praise from a grateful nation.”
He also noted that the victory of the team is the most precious gift that the  Super Eagles had presented to the nation so close to its centenary celebrations next year.
According to him, the success of the team will put a spritely “spring in our steps,’ emphasising that the victory is a reminder that “Nigeria is a land of possibilities where dreams can come true” and it is also an indication the citizens' ‘inspiration’ and ‘resilience.’
The president who recalled with bitterness the lack-lustre performance of the country in previous tournaments, describing such outings as ‘very humiliating’, said owing to this antecedent, many Nigerians gave the Super Eagles no chance of winning the trophy as “the general perception was that our football has been dissipated of its energy.
Many didn’t believe Super Eagles could deliver.”
Contrary to the expectations, the president who described Keshi as a legend, observed that the team refused to be held back as it focused on its goal “with inflexible will’ by refusing to surrender.
“Your victory is a good indication that there is a victory for us as we work to transform Nigeria,” he said, declaring that his administration’s process of rebuilding sports has just begun.
He added that his government will continue to support sports just as he expressed appreciation to the technical crew, state governments, corporate bodies and individuals that contributed to the success of the team.
He urged the team  to work seriously towards qualifying for the next World Cup in Brazil.
In his speech, Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who said the victory of the Super Eagles was a milestone and not a destination, appealed to all stakeholders to put the years of acrimony behind them and stop creating crisis where none exists.
Among the dignitaries who graced the state banquet to honour the Super Eagles were Vice-President Mohammed Namadi Sambo; Senate President David Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, governors, ministers and chieftains of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by its National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

Sullivan Chime Speaks To Press, Says ''I had Cancer Of The Nose''

Enugu state Governor, Sullivan Chime spoke to the press yesterday since his return from London for a medical trip
Read Further........

The governor said he stayed abroad for too long in order to remove cancerous tumours from his neck and nose before they could spread.
Chime, who spoke to journalists in Enugu, said that he was not sick initially when he departed the country on September 19, 2012 but that his health altered as a result of the agony and trauma he went through in the course of removing the cancerous tumours in London.
Chime was away from the country for upward of 140 days thus generating a controversy over how long a governor could leave his state with many, including a Save Enugu Group asking for a transfer of power to his deputy.
In narrating how he stayed out of the country from September 19, 2012 to February 7, 2013, the governor said, “In August last year, I was privileged to be one of those nominated by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum to go to Germany to study their federalism, I was to represent the South-East zone; I had to use the opportunity of the trip to pass through London to do my medicals since it was the only opportunity I had to do that. After my medical, I was certified fit by the doctors, but I noticed that I had a little growth beneath my jaw. Ordinarily, nobody could see it but I felt it seriously and asked the doctors to do further investigation on it.
“I was later referred to a GP who after examining me said there was nothing wrong with me. I still asked for further investigation. I even made arrangement with them to help me set appointment for closer investigation. I left for Germany and had to still return to London to keep the appointment for proper screening of the growth. It was after the screening that it was discovered that the growth in question was cancerous. It was also discovered that the main tumour was behind my nose; it was simply called cancer of the nose.”
Chime said he indeed planned for a long trip and duly informed the Enugu State House of Assembly and made arrangement for the smooth running of the state.
He said, “Cancer is such a thing that when you hear it, the person involved will even declare himself dead instantly. I was subjected to further scanning at the nose and neck and was told that it was curable, not manageable. When I asked how to go about it, I was told it had to be as early as possible before it spreads to other areas.
“Accordingly, I arranged for it to be done. I had to cancel further trips and agreed to be back to London in two weeks. Within the period, I came back to Nigeria and made arrangement for transmission. I wrote a letter to the Speaker, informing him of my decision to proceed on leave and sought his cooperation to work with my Deputy who will act as Governor.
“We even held two executive council meetings within the period where I informed members of my exco that I was proceeding on a long vacation. I left for Abuja the next day and attended the Governors’ Forum meeting and the next day I left for London, settled in and saw the oncologist the next day.
The governor said the news of his rumoured death sometime last year indeed amused him. “When I read in the papers that I had died in India, it was a source of entertainment. Each time we wanted to laugh, we looked for Nigeria papers online,” he said.
He however took exception to alleged attempts to liken his case with that of the late President Umaru Yar’adua who died of heart disease in 2010.
Chime said his case was “never an emergency and it can never be likened to that of Yar’Adua.”
“While Yar’Adua travelled out sick. I travelled out a healthy man and let me also tell you that the attacks started about two weeks after I left” he added.
Meanwhile, he said he had informed the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly that he had resumed his duties though he declared that he was not in perfect health yet.
“I was officially discharged, that’s why I had to return. I’m still in the process of recovery and as such you don’t expect me to start running tomorrow but I’m free to resume duties to ensure that activities are running on full speed,” the governor said.
